Blunt-tipped needles reduced the incidence of glove puncture during abdominal closure

چکیده
The study by Hartley and colleagues confirms the high rate of glove punctures that occurs during general surgical procedures (1). Most glove punctures are not immediately recognised; therefore, they pose a risk for prolonged cutaneous exposure to blood and, thus, to blood-borne disease that can be transmitted from patient to surgeon (2). Relatively few interventions in randomised clinical trials have been shown to reduce the risk for glove punctures, with the exception of the use of biunt-Cipped needles and double gloving (3). Two methodological issues, however, are relevant to the interpretation of this study. First, the authors describe a method of closure during which the needle is guided with the finger of the nondominant hand. Therefore, the results of this study may not be relevant to surgeons geon using a number-1 polydioxanone suture with either blunt-tipped (n = 46) or cutting (n=39) needles. Immediately before closure, the surgeon put on new gloves. After closure, gloves were examined both by inflating them with air and then immersing them in water and by filling them with water. During the second half of the study, gloves were also tested using an electrical detection device that sounded an alarm if the glove was punctured.

متن کاملPrevention of headache after lumbar puncture: questionnaire survey of neurologists and neurosurgeons in United Kingdom.
The aetiology of headache after lumbar puncture is related to the hole left in the dura after the needle has been withdrawn, which allows the cerebrospinal fluid to leak out of the subarachnoid space. The headache can persist for prolonged periods and predispose to subdural haematomas, which are associated with a high mortality. Tourtellotte showed that this headache could be significantly redu...
متن کاملThe Use of Blunt-tipped 12-mm Trocars Without Fascial Closure in Laparoscopic Live Donor Nephrectomy
OBJECTIVES Blunt-tipped trocar placement may eliminate the need for fascial closure in transperitoneal laparoscopic live donor nephrectomies (LDN). The process of 12-mm blunt-tipped trocar insertion through the abdominal wall involves fascial and muscle spreading, not incision. Coaptation of the tissue layers occurs during withdrawal of the trocar, preventing volume gaps that can be prone to he...
متن کاملComparison of blunt and sharp needles for transforaminal epidural steroid injections.
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the sharp and blunt needles in order to determine the incidence of complications during transforaminal anterior epidural steroid injections. METHODS In this retrospective study, 185 cases that undergo transforaminal epidural steroid injection with sharp or blunt needles were evaluated between June 2004 and December 2008. Patients age, sex, diagn...
